Step 2: Choose Your Format

• Standard Mode (OFF): Keep the toggle OFF for tests taken before September 2025. This calculates the standard average of 4 subjects.
• 2025 Mode (ON): Switch the toggle ON if you are calculating based on the new format. This excludes Science and calculates the average of only 3 subjects.

What is an ACT Superscore?

An ACT Superscore is the average of your best scores from each subject area across multiple test attempts. Unlike a “Composite Score,” which is the average from a single test day, the superscore allows you to “cherry-pick” your strengths.

For example:

• Test 1 (April): Math 28, English 34
• Test 2 (June): Math 32, English 30
• Your Superscore: Combines the 34 (English) and 32 (Math), ignoring the lower scores.

How to Calculate ACT Superscore (The Math)

Method 1: The Standard Formula (Current)

Used for most admissions cycles through early 2025.

• Rounding Rule: If your average ends in .5 or higher, round UP to the nearest whole number. (e.g., 30.5 becomes 31).

Method 2: The New 2025 Format (No Science)

Starting in September 2025, the ACT is making a historic change. The Science section will become optional for the composite score calculation.

How to Report Superscore on the Common App

This is where most students make mistakes. You generally DO NOT type your calculated superscore into a box on the Common App. Instead, the Common App uses a “Self-Reporting” system:

1. Composite Score: Enter the highest composite score you earned in a single sitting. (Do not put your superscore here).
2. Section Scores: You will be asked for your highest individual scores for English, Math, Reading, and Science, along with the dates you achieved them.
